Director Kevin Smith and the Southwest Twitter War
Kevin Smith, director of Clerks, among other 90's cult classics, was recently ejected from a Southwest Airlines flight for not properly fitting into his seat and being "2 Fat 2 Fly." And what might have ordinarily been a quiet incident erupted into a Twitter to-do, reports Times Online.
Smith, who has 1.65 million followers on Twitter, tweeted throughout the entire incident, at one point overloading Southwest's server because of the amount of traffic.
The ensuing debate led to a temporary failure of Southwest’s servers due to the weight of traffic, about which Smith commented on Twitter: "Wow. @southwestair servers going down because of traffic from kevinsmith fiasco." They'll blame THAT on my width, too.”
The term “Kevin Smith Twitter” was the 23rd most searched for term in Google at 1pm today. He has used the media attention to highlight the release of his forthcoming movie, Cop Out.
Whether Smith was in the right, his story is certainly a nod to the power of using social media.
