Making Bank from Unemployed 20-Somethings
The only people more desperate for the 20-something-set to land full-time positions than 20-somethings just may be the parents they're moving back in with.
It is with this in mind that Lesley Mitler is offering a new luxury service for the un- and under-employed--a demographic one would assume most companies would rather not target. Featured in this weekend's New York Times, Mitler and The Greenberg Educational Group have teamed up to start a tutoring program called Priority Candidates, which coaches recently graduated young people on how to go about their job hunt. But the service appears to be as much for the parents of the unemployed as it is for those actually attending these tutoring sessions.
With only 20 percent of recent graduates landing work immediately after casting off their cap and gown, it's likely the business of performance preparation will continue to boom. It's a natural evolution from from test and college-prep, in which The Greenberg Educational Group normally specializes, to "adulthood prep."
In theory, Mitler's team is preparing them for the "real world." But it's worth asking: Does a $400-an-hour session with a 'job-hunting' professional as your guide really prepare you for being a grown-up? Or does it continue the hand-holding that the parents paying for the service are trying to prevent...
What do you think?
